Hydroxyurea – the good, the bad, the truth

HYDROXYUREA. The first ever FDA Approved drug for the treatment of Sickle Cell Disease. But even after 25+ years of being the go-to medication in the treatment of this disease, many individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease have grave misgivings about taking it as part of their treatment plan.

Many point to the fact that the medical community is not being 100% forthcoming about all it’s side effects and feel that they are being forced to take it.

So for this month’s adult sickle cell support session, the Sickle Cell Association of Ontario sits down with Dr. Jacob Pendergrast, a clinical hematologist in the Red Blood Cell clinic at the University Health Network, to have a REAL TALK about hydroxyurea. No obfuscation. No politics. No nonsense.

If you have any questions for Dr. Pendergrast but will not be able to attend or have any other general questions, please feel free to contact our Director of Patient Support, Ulysse Guerrier at patient.support@sicklecellontario.ca
