May 8 2024: International Thalassaemia Day

Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF)

With an estimated 100 million people worldwide carrying genes responsible for thalassaemia, and more than 300,000 babies born annually with severe forms of the disease, International Thalassaemia Day is a powerful call to raise awareness about this condition and its impact while celebrating the solidarity of the resilient thalassaemia community worldwide.

Celebrated every year on May 8, the International Thalassaemia Day (ITD) is a global occasion on which people with thalassaemia, carers, friends and supporters, healthcare professionals, thalassaemia advocates, patient organizations, the public and the media unite to raise awareness of this disease and call for changes towards the improvement of patients’ lives and well-being.

The theme of the event this year is:

“Empowering Lives, Embracing Progress: Equitable and Accessible Thalassaemia Treatment For All”.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

You too can take action and together we can create change!

Here is a number of ways you, your family, or your organization can engage with the campaign to improve the lives of the thalassaemia community worldwide:

Use the Campaign Resources

Display the ITD2024 posters, banners, social media visuals and frames, and infocards in your community for everyone to see.

You can also use them when promoting you own activities or events for the big day!

Get Social

Post about thalassaemia on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn using the hashtags #ITD2024, #BeAwareShareCare, #TreatmentForThal and #TreatmentForAll.

Organize an Event/Activity

Big or small, offline or online, International Thalassaemia Day events get people talking and learning about thalassaemia. Ideas are endless and can span from hosting a webinar or a workshop to lighting up a local landmark, organizing an awareness walk in your town or an educational event in your local school.

Share your Story

If you live with thalassaemia or are close with someone who does, share your story with the campaign and send a powerful message of solidarity.

These stories not only increase awareness of the distinct and often shared challenges faced by individuals living with thalassaemia, but also highlight the resilience that characterizes our global community. #YourStoryYourJourney
