Final Burial Ceremonies slated for Alhaja Asiata Adukę Onikoyi-Laguda, the iconic Sickle Cell Warrior who passed away on February 29, aged 94, has been cancelled.
The ceremonies were earlier slated for April 9, the fortieth day of her transition. Close family sources informed SICKLE CELL NEWS that the event was cancelled taking into consideration the perilous times brought about by the Coronavirus and the subsequent lockdown of Lagos State by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Similar shutdowns are imposed on Ogun State and the Federal Capital, Abuja. Other Nigerian states have sealed their borders to incoming and outgoing traffic to get a handle on the COVID-19 pandemic.
It will be interesting how the family handles the anniversaries of the passage of a unique woman on a unique day (February 29 occurs only once in four years).
