Coronavirus – International Sickle Cell Symposium Cancelled

As more and more countries take measures to contain and halt the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the organizers of the 7th International SCD Symposium slated for Accra, Ghana have called of the event. An email made available to SICKLE CELL NEWS Wk states thus:

‘In response to the rapidly changing circumstances associated with the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), the organizing committee of the 7th International African Symposium on Sickle Cell Disease  have made the decision to cancel the conference scheduled for July 7 – 10, 2020.

Considering all the information available at the moment, the leadership believes that cancelling the conference is the responsible action to take. The health and safety of attendees, exhibitors, and the community are its top priority.

On behalf of the international organizing committee, we appreciate your understanding given these unique circumstances.’

The event customarily gathers SCD experts and stakeholders from around the world together, which would have been risky, considering fact that the Coronavirus continues to spread.

The World Health Organization has now declared the virus a pandemic.
