WORLD SICKLE CELL ICON PASSES AWAY AT 94

ALHAJA ASIATA ADUKE ONIKOYI-LAGUDA, WORLD’S SICKLE CELL ICON PASSES AWAY!

She was 84 years old when SICKLE CELL NEWS first brought her to world attention; ever since, the global sickle cell community has been transfixed by her story.

Born in Kudeti, Ibadan, Nigeria on 1 November 1925, Alhaja Asiata Aduke Onikoyi-Laguda trained as a secretary in London and had six children. Forever ill while growing up, her sickle cell crises petered away in her 40s.

She was celebrated on the October-December 2019 edition of SICKLE CELL NEWS. In October at the prompting of Ssebandeke Ashraf the Uganda sickle cell advocate, she penned a letter to fellow sickle cell warriors. It was her first and only missive to the sickle cell world.
