Simof Sickle Cell Initiative is committed to a pain-free generation within the shortest possible time …
In Ibadan, ‘the broken china on seven hills’, according to Chinua Achebe, and one of Nigeria’s three top megacities, home to the first TV station in Africa, the then tallest building in Nigeria and the country’s premier university, among other firsts, there is a crying need for sickle cell awareness. Ibadan’s outlying communities and urban sprawl are bastions of semi-information, unconcern and outright ignorance!
Simof Sickle Cell Initiative has rightly identified the need to fill the yawning gap in the near-bottomless hole of non-awareness. Founded in 2014 by Mrs. Simisola Fasan Awe, the organization conducts a yearly must-attend carnival-like (aptly named) RED BALLOON WALK, at which participants brandish balloons of the stated colour.
Free genotype tests are performed, the first step to positive action on SCD, and similarly the first step to the realization of Simof’s ultimate objective, viz, a sickle-cell-free world. Literatures on the world’s most commonly-inherited genetic disorder are also dished out at market places and at religious and educational institutions. Often unpublicized, the Initiative supports the medical and psychological treatment of indigent ‘warriors’ and gives them economic empowerment.
Simof Sickle Cell Initiative is committed to a pain-free generation within the shortest possible time.
